Exploration!

lcweb2.loc.gov

www.planetary.org (I want to delete it)
All of these pictures are showing about the EXPLORATION~~
The first picture, there are two people climbing on a big snow mountain. They looks very hard doing their job. That's cool! I like snow and the nature with the mountains. Being with the fresh air and the fantastic view must be excited! but maybe they will face a lot of troubles and many different question...maybe the weather is really cold and there lived some aggressive animals that haven't have food for many days...That's terrible! I can't imagine what will happen if they meet they...Oh,I'm sorry...GOOD LUCK for them~~~
The next picture shows the place beside the sea. The people looks very strong and aggressive! Maybe they found a new land just now. They may feel excited when they arrived there, because they were sailing very hard to achieve the dream about EXPLORATION. It's seems like a very beautiful Iceland that they never knew. They were thinking to be famous with the great finding when they came back and took this good news to people in their country. The question is, who is the person that found it at the first time? How can they deal with many people say he was the owner of the land? That's really a severe question.
The place of the last picture is the ocean, too. The ocean enjoyed two big ships. Maybe it's similar with the second picture. It's has some ices on the sea! Maybe the people in the ship is finding the Iceland or ice mountain. The sea-exploration is important for a country because it's a sprirt of persistant. People in this country can learned a lot and be affect by people who came to found another place. They play an very good exemplary role in people this country. That's really important and they also can take many good things back for their country. A another place or some culter. It's very meaningful.

The Fur Trade

www.gamespot.com www.operation-dialogue.com

www.hbc.com

All these pictures show me the Fur Trade.

The first one is about a baby seal lying in the white snow. Its black nose and little eyes are so cute! I love it~~Its body is as white as the snow around its. but..it looks not very happy. Maybe it's cold? The weather is so cold in the picture, I don't know if the seal could resist the cold weather. But I hope so.

The second picture has two ships of Fur Trade. The people in the ships sell carcass they found.
I think they are so cruel and cold hearted. I really hate the behavior they did. The animals were so poor and they never did something wrong. Some of them a just baby, but the people never think for them, just think about how can they get more money. That's horrible and more than I could bear.

The ship is sailing along the sea in the third picture. The people there looks very happy and excited. They have to pass the carcass in their boat to another place. Maybe they can get a lot of money instead of the fur trade. So they're sailing the ship very hard, because they looking forward to arrive quickly and quickly. In their eyes, the fur trade is nothing, only the money. I'm really exasperated with them. I hope their ship dead in the water and they can have a punish.

The fourth picture is the most cruelest one. The man is standing with fur trade in both of his hands. It's terrible and really hurtled my heart. It's unfair for the poor animals! They never did something wrong or bad for humans! The man is so bad that he doesn't repent, but even be prond of himself...I hate him forever!
There is a fur trade in the last picture. The animal might be cherish when it alive. But...it's dead!
Someone made it to a comfortable coat. The killer may get a lot of money by selling this fur trade. I feel very sad for the poor animal.....We should condemn those bad people who kill them together!!!

My Literary Essay

Various people in the world show their bravery in different ways. Some of them maybe immolated themselves to save a person. Others could just do something new that they never did before. However, in both "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "the Sniper", the protagonists have a trait of bravery, even when they were facing death.

In the story "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", Sir Gawain is a brave Protagonist who can step forward when facing trouble and keep his promise to the Green Knight. For instance, when the Green Knight cane to provoke the King Aurthur, Sir Gawain was not astounded as other Knights, but "step forward" and said "No one laughs at the Knights of the Round Table". He was brave enough to did what he asked with his confident voice. Thus, Sir Gawain was calm when facing the menace and be brave to retort the Green Knight perfectly. In addition, he was brave to hold his promise to the Green Knight. even he might never come back from the Green Castle. He didn't run away although the Lord Westall enticed him to escape, but just went as he promised. When the Lord always recommended him to "run for life","the Green knight killed everyone who goes near it.".......but even he said"you must escape mow, I'll help you". Sir Gawain still Kept the words he promised to the Green Knight one year ago. Hence, it means that Sir Gawain can adhere to his principles when there was a lure in front of him. In summary, Sir Gawain is a protagonist who has a trait of brave. He protected the King Aurthur even if someone enticed him, he never broke his heavy promise.

In the story "The Sniper", the Republican sniper is a brave protagonist who didn't recoil by the excoriated pain of the severe wound his enemy caused, and he can be calm to think of a ruse which was successful when facing death death. The sniper shows his bravery when he was injured deeply by the enemy. For example, when "the blood was oozing through the sleeve of his coat", he didn't recoil but "broke the neck of the iodine bottle and let the bitter fluid trip into the wound". It was extremely hurt and he was almost paralyzed. Thus, he is brave to resist the pain, not just lying down and wait for death. In addition, he is brave even when he was in the face of death and be calm to think of a good ruse to save himself. "His ruse had succeeded". This idea which flashed into his mind pulled him back from the death. Hence, even when he was wounded and facing danger, he can still kept a calm bream thought what should he do next, and never give up to his enemies and death. In summary, the sniper is a character who shows bravery when facing the antagonist, he didn't give up, contrarily be calm and thought of the strategic ruse in the story.

These two stories show there are examples of being brave. Both of the protagonists show their bravery to the audience, they deserved praiseful. However, there’re a large number of people in the world that are also showing bravery in the news or around life. All of them are gritty by the bravery, just like Sir Gawain and the sniper.

John Carbot

ushistoryimages.com Picture from:www.heritage.nf.ca

Question1 Find two pictures of John Cabot, post it and Describe his appearance in 3-5 sentences

John Cabot was standing at the Viking Ship in the bigger picture. He looks somewhat old but mature. I think he was very stronge and tall. He was wering a orange .... that he seems comfident.

In the smaller picture John Cabot is asking his follower to do something important. He might be a very actice master and always do well in leadership.

2. Who is John Cabot? Tell me ten facts (real information) about him.
-----

1 John Cabot (about 1450-1499) was an Italian-born English explorer and navigator.

2 In Italy, he is known as Giovanni Caboto (which is his original name).
3 Cabot was born in Italy but moved to England in 1495.

4 At the request of King Henry VII of England, Cabot sailed to Canada in 1497, commanding the small ship called "Matthew."

5 Cabot landed near Labrador, Newfoundland, or Cape Breton Island on June 24, 1497.

6 One of John Cabot's three sons, the explorer Sebastian Cabot, accompanied him on this trip. Cabot claimed the land for England.
7 Cabot explored the Canadian coastline and named many of its islands and capes. The mission's purpose was to search for a Northwest passage across North America to Asia (a seaway to Asia). Cabot was unsuccessful, although he thought that he had reached northeastern Asia.
8 Cabot undertook a second, larger expedition in 1498. On this trip, Cabot may have reached America, but that is uncertain.

9 Cabot's expeditions were the first of Britain's claims to Canada.
10 John Cabot died in England in 1499.

3. Why is he important to Canadian history?

Because John Cabot explored North America for England in 1497 he sailed to what is now eastern Canada. There is some controversy as to where he landed. He disappeared at sea in 1498.

4. Why did he leave Europe?

Because Spain and Portugal were not interested in Cabots ideas So he want to leave Europe to find China or Japen
5. What happened to John Cabot?

With a great sense of adventure, John Cabot approached the kings of Spain and Portugal for sponsorship that would enable him to get an expedition together to similarly explore a new route to the orient by sailing west.
Cabot had met many English merchants trading in the Mediterranean, and there was a large Italian community at that time in Bristol, so he decided to go to England and seek sponsorship from King Henry VII
Cabot left Bristol on his ship the Matthew and sailed west with the intention of finding China or Japan.
Instead, he discovered the “New Founde Landes” which we now know of course as Newfoundland, Canada.
He and his companions then set sail south, travelling over nine hundred miles down the east coast of north America before turning east and back to England
Arriving back in Bristol on August 5th 1497, he was acclaimed as a hero by his sponsors and became a major celebrity in Bristol. The King was extremely pleased to hear of Cabot’s adventures and paid him 10 for his discovery of the “new founde landes” and suggested that Cabot make a return journey to find out more of the new continent
Sadly, John Carbot did not return from the second expedition...We don't know the reason of his death. He may have perished in a storm, or hit an iceberg. That's too bad!
That's the end of John Carbot.

6. When John Cabot reached Newfoundland's Grand Banks, he was surprised to find the large supply of cod.
Find a picture of cod and post it up on your blog
picture from www.wotif.com

7. Watch this clip. What did you learn from the video clip? Write 5-8 sentences.

I learned a lot from this video.
Cristoforo Colombo is the moet important person who affects John Carbot. After Colombo coming back from serching New Land, John wanted it, too.
He lesded his Viking Ship for a month and foud a beautiful land called Newfoundland as we konw in Canada.
He became a hero when he came back. People loved him.
But he dead during his second expedition. Nobody konws why and when....
That's a kind of tragedy.

Bonus1. What does his ship "Mathew" look like? Post a picture and include the web address where you got it from.
